China Donates Eye Medical Equipment to LMUTH

The Chinese government has donated modern eye medical equipment to LMUTH worth K3 million. The donation was made on December 23rd, 2019.  

Levy Mwanawasa Medical University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Elwyn Chomba, representing Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Dr. Kennedy Malama, received the donation on behalf of LMUTH. Economic and Commercial Counselor, at the Chinese Embassy, Mr. Ouyang Daobing made the donation on behalf of the Chinese Government. In a speech read for him by Prof. Chomba, Dr. Malama stated that the donated modern eye equipment will greatly enhance the provision of health care services at the hospital as it will enable the hospital to operate at an optimal level and provide the requisite of highly specialized care that every Zambian deserves.“The Ministry of Health, and indeed, the Zambian Government remain indebted to the Government of the People’s Republic of China, for your sustained and unwavering support to the health sector in Zambia”. Dr. Malama said He added that the continued support by the Chinese Government to the people of Zambia was a true demonstration that “our brothers and sisters in China are willing to work with us in meeting our vision of offering quality care to all Zambians by 2030 as stipulated in the 7th National Development Plan”.

The Permanent Secretary observed that with the donation of the eye equipment, China has reaffirmed its commitment to the elimination of avoidable blindness in developing countries such as Zambia. He stressed that the impact of blindness on people particularly those living in poverty was extremely devastating. “This is totally unacceptable considering that eighty percent (80%)of all blindness is avoidable or reversible”. And speaking early, Mr. Ouyang Daobing said the donation was a reaffirmation of the strong relationship between China and Zambia. Mr. Daobing said in the past 40 years, his Government has been sending medical doctors to Zambia and currently, the 21st Chinese medical team was at LMUTH, working in variousspecialties in the hospital.
