The Government has officially inaugurated the Levy Mwanawasa Medical University (LMMU) Council, marking a significant milestone in the governance and strategic leadership of one of Zambia's leading medical training institutions.
It is the first time a University Council was being appointed at Levy Mwanawasa Medical University in accordance with the law.

This historic council, appointed in accordance with the Education Act No. 4 of 2013 and Amendment Act No. 23 of 2021, comprises distinguished professionals committed to transforming LMMU into a center of academic and professional excellence.

This council represents the first formal governance body established at LMMU in accordance with the Higher Education Act No. 4 of 2013 and Amendment Act No. 23 of 2021. The Minister of Education emphasized that this is a historic milestone, as LMMU has operated without a formal council structure for an extended period.
Their appointment marks the beginning of formal institutional governance aimed at transforming LMMU into a center of academic and professional excellence, as emphasized by Minister Douglas Syakalima.

As emphasized by Minister Douglas Syakalima, the council faces urgent transformation work. "The University has not had a council for a long time. There is urgent work ahead of you," the Minister stated. "Many systems need to be normalized, including employment structures, and this Council must provide policy direction to stabilize and strengthen operations."
The council's work represents service to the nation, with their primary remuneration being the gratitude of the Zambian people and the positive impact their leadership will bring to the university and medical education in Zambia.
