About

Prof. Elwyn Chomba has a distinguished record of academic achievement, hospital management and high level public administration. She is the pioneer to the position of the Vice Chancellor for the Levy Mwanawasa Medical University, the first purpose-built health training Public University offering health profession’s education and training in Zambia. Prior to this appointment, Prof. Chomba held the positions of Permanent Secretary Training in the Ministry of Health, Permanent Secretary CRAIR in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Community Development, Mother and Child Health.

She has had an illustrious career as an academician at the University of Zambia (UNZA), where she rose from Senior Lecturer to her current professorial rank. Prof. Chomba also served on the UNZA Senate and was Secretary of the Research Ethics Committee. An experienced hospital administrator, Prof. Chomba was for four years, the Managing Director of the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), Zambia’s largest hospital. Her career inhospital administration stretches nearly 40 years, back to when she was Medical Superintendent at Wusakile Hospital under the then Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) and rose to the position of Chief medical officer for Luanshya Division. A paediatrician of international renown, Prof. Chomba has special interest in neurology, neonatology, HIV/AIDS and child sexual abuse. She has published extensively in these areas. Prof. Chomba, during her tenure as Head of the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at UTH, was instrumental in the establishment of special clinics for child care. These included the Child Development Specialist Clinic, the Neurology Specialist Clinic and the ‘One-Stop Centre’ for Sexually Abused Children. Highly recognized honours have been bestowed upon Prof. Chomba throughout her professional career. In 1997, she received a Merit Award for Best Clinical Teaching Skills, an award funded by the UK Department for International Development.

Prof. Chomba has conducted extensive research in Paediatrics and in 2014, was awarded “THE MOST OUTSTANDING FEMALE SCIENTIST” by the National Science and Technology Council?? Professor Chomba is a member of the Royal College of Physicians Ireland and holds a Diploma in Child Health from Glasgow. She was in the pioneer class of medical students in the School of Medicine at the University of Zambia. At the graduation ceremony for her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degrees, she received prizes as Best Student in Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Paediatrics. Prof. Chomba is known for being a leader who creates a shared vision and work collaboratively to execute that vision to support and elevate an organisation that she leads.
