Dr. Ahmed is a Consultant Obstetrician Gynaecologist at the Women and Newborn Hospital of the University Teaching Hospitals in Lusaka, Zambia. He is on attachment by the Ministry of Health to the Levy Mwanawasa Medical University where he is an Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the Director of Research and Postgraduate Studies. Dr Ahmed has formal training in obstetrics, gynaecology, electrical and electronic engineering and public health. He completed his training in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Hammersmith Hospital in London where he was also a Perinatal Fellow. He is actively involved in clinical and research training and mentoring of undergraduates and postgraduates in Zambia. Dr. Ahmed was previously Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the School of Medicine at the University of Zambia.
Dr. Ahmed acts as consultant and advisor to the Ministry of Health on reproductive health matters, and is a member of relevant technical working groups. With marked health disparities in Zambia, his focus is to train and mentor health care workers and conduct research on positioning emergency obstetric and newborn care in Zambia within the framework of universal health care. His other research interests and activities are in health systems, reproductive epidemiology, reproductive health equity, health policy, law and ethics in obstetrics and gynaecology, maternal autonomy and maternal-fetal conflict, medical device quality assurance, and electrical power quality in clinical environments.
